The family business was born in the late 80’s in Boston by our father Günther Briem. With our mother Andrea by his side, they ran their business together out of the house for 20 years. My brother spent his young adult years helping until 27, when his passion for the tech world called him to California. Being only 15 years old at the time, it was my turn to help my family until graduating high school and attending culinary school.
During my final year of school, Dad was diagnosed with cancer. With the immense strength and support of our mom, she assured Oliver and me to continue with our lives during the treatment. Andrea ran the day to day operations of the business while her husband went through chemotherapy, continuing to reassure their sons not to worry. Despite a successful removal of the malignant tumor, the family was struck by unexpected news: The cancer had spread, and Dad would need to go through the process all over again. Six months later in 2006, he passed away at the age of 60.
With all of us lost, we continued the business Günther had started for 10 more years. During these years, I became co-owner with my mom and my brother continued supporting us whenever we needed help. The early years were a struggle internally for both our family and business. We all agreed to forge ahead. Collectively, we kept the business going, and I’m very proud of that. Oliver’s career was thriving on the West Coast. He and his wonderful wife were ready to start a family. Our mom continued to support the business, helping whenever I needed it.
Meanwhile, I was managing the business and still trying to discover what my future held. As long as I could remember, I wanted nothing to do with the family business. My attitude towards it had mostly been negative, yet I was extremely lucky to grow up with my family close by. Our parents provided us a wonderful life in a loving home while instilling pride, integrity, and kindness.
It took years to realize how special it was to be part of my family and the business they started. Each person in my family has shaped me in many ways: Oliver’s calm and methodical nature; Andrea’s toughness, love, care, and selflessness; Günther’s virtue, boldness, and humor.
I will use these traits as my compass, for my family has given me the backbone to raise this business to new heights.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
